DRBC confirms postponement of vote

WEST TRENTON – The Delaware River Basin Commission confirmed on Friday that the special meeting it planned for Monday to consider draft natural gas development regulations has been postponed “to allow additional time for review by the five commission members.”

The agency provided no additional information, but opponents of hydrofracturing to harvest natural gas in the Delaware River Basin say it is because the votes weren’t there to approve it.

Delaware Governor Markell said his state would vote against it and New York has indicated similar intentions.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the delay “further demonstrates that the proposed regulations for fracking in the Delaware River Basin are not ready to see the light of day.”

Among those groups praising the delay is Hudson Riverkeeper, whose Kate Hudson said it was music to their ears.

“We regard it as extremely heartening news not only that the vote has been postponed, but that the governor of Delaware has weighed in, in a very strongly worded letter that indicates that he shares many of the concerns that all of us do with respect to the environmental impacts and the lacks of guarantees that those environmental impacts would be avoid with the regulations that have been proposed,” she said.
