Pike transportation program gets state money

MILFORD - Pike County’s transportation services program has been awarded grants from PennDot and the  Pennsylvania Lottery. The grants awarded the program were a Community Public transportation Grant for $254,051 for the Shared Ride Program for Senior Citizens and a $50,000 grant for the Rural Transportation Program for Persons with Disabilities.

A tentative confirmation of a Consolidated Capital Grant has been recently received which will allow for the purchase of two handicapped accessible buses, one non-accessible and one fully accessible minivan. Part of the grant funding applied for in this grant included funding for upgrading and safety modifications of the current older vehicles and funding for additional office equipment for the transportation department. The grant for the office equipment is $5,000. The same amount was awarded for the vehicle upgrades. The total amount of this grant is $205,000.

All the grant awards has enabled this new department, in the past 10 months of its existence, to have ordered or soon be ordering a total of nine new vehicles. All the grant awards total around $431,000 at no cost to Pike County and its taxpayers.
