Heavy snow blankets region, one fatal accident reported

POCONOS – Over a foot of snow fell on parts of the Poconos Saturday.  The heaviest snow was in the Tobyhanna and Blakeslee area.  Most areas, however, had only a few inches.

PennDOT and municipal road crews did their best to keep up with the fast falling wet snow.  Main roads are open.  Secondary roads vary.   Expect some to still be slushy or snow-covered, possibly through midday.

One person died in a weather-related crash on Route 611.  The 57-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was a front-seat passenger in an SUV which went out of control.  The SUV crossed the center line and was hit by an oncoming car.  The victim’s husband, who was driving the SUV, and the driver of the car, were both taken to the hospital.

Massive power outages continue.  As of 7:00 this morning, over Met Ed reports over 14,000 customers out in Pike County, more than 9.000 in Monroe, but just under 200 out in Wayne.  PPL reports just over 2,500 out in Monroe with scattered small outages in Pike and Wayne.  Utilities say they are bringing in crews from other areas to help restore power.
