State prison in Wayne County may close

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is considering closing several prisons across the state, including one in Northeast Pennsylvania.  On the list is the correctional institution at Waymart.

According to reports, the closings are being considered to avoid cutbacks in education and job training programs.

“Our commonwealth faces a serious budget deficit that means we have limited funds to provide the services the people of Pennsylvania expect from their government and we must make government more efficient to avoid broad cuts to education, job creation programs and social services for the most vulnerable,” said Gov. Tom Wolf, in a statement released on Friday.

The closures, if approved, could impact about 1,000 employees, mostly corrections officers.  Many would be transferred to other facilities.
