Murder/suicide in Wayne County drug related, police say

MOUNT PLEASANT – What started out as a welfare check at a home in Wayne County turned into a bizarre crime investigation.   Police discovered body parts on the property, including in a burn barrel and in a basement freezer.   That was after a standoff with Gaston Gomez.

The second time police visited the place, they heard a gunshot.  Inside, they found Gomez, 57, dead with a wound to the head.

Police initially were checking on Joseph Mastropole, who had been missing four a month, according to his girlfriend, who called police.  An autopsy, scheduled for today, could determine if the remains could belong to Mastropole.

Later in the investigation, police discovered a marijuana grow operation in a barn on the property.
