Monroe County man arrested on child porn charges

POCONO TWP – An East Stroudsburg man was arrested on Friday and charged with possessing and sharing child pornography on Facebook following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

In late April, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a “cybertip” from the staff of Facebook, indicating that a Facebook user had been trading files of child pornography with other users through their private messaging service.  That tip was then forwarded to the Monroe County Office of the District Attorney’s cybercrime unit.

A joint investigation between County Detectives and the Pocono Township Police Department eventually led detectives to uncovering that William Garris, Jr., 36, was using his cell phone to send and receive the child pornography.  Detectives arrived at Garris’ place of employment, in Pocono Township, armed with a search warrant and discovered one video and six photographs of child pornography, depicting children as young as five years old.

Garris was charged with several counts of disseminating and possessing child pornography, as well as criminal use of a communication facility.

He was placed in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail.  A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 30.
