Chase begins in PA, ends with crash in NY

PORT JERVIS NY – A Phoenixville, PA, was arrested Sunday morning and hit with a long list of charges, including felony reckless endangerment. 

The pursuit began when National Park Service Police Rangers say Jeffrey Steigelman, 26, of Phoenixville, PA, nearly struck a Ranger with his car.  Steigelman led park rangers and officers with the Milford Boro Police Department and Eastern Pike Regional Police Department towards the bridge linking Matamoras PA with Port Jervis NY.

Port Jervis and Town of Deerpark Police Officer deployed to the Port Jervis/Matamoras Bridge and various locations on Pike Street in Port Jervis and suspect vehicle proceeding in a reckless and unsafe manner across the bridge.  Tire deflation devices were deployed and the driver was stopped after striking and damaging a fence and two unoccupied vehicles parked on Pike Street.  The driver taken into custody and was treated for minor injuries.

Steigelman was placed in the Port Jervis City Lock-Up without bail pending a Port Jervis City Court arraignment. Besides felony reckless engenderment, other charges include unlawful fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of marijuana, all misdemeanors, and several vehicle and traffic violations.
