Pike receives grant for tick study

MILFORD - Pike County received a $15,000 grant award from the Lyme Disease Association. The money will help with the $47,000 cost of the study being done presently in the county. Of the 500 ticks caught and studied so far, 36 percent have Lyme disease and 13 percent have the Powassan virus, which if left untreated, can cause meningitis or encephalitis.

The objective of the tick study is to capture a total of 1,000 ticks from around the county and study them. The county is divided into nine parts and grid work is being done in each part to capture and identify what disease or virus each tick has.

The tick study has already received a $5,000 grant award from the DV Educational Foundation.
