Peaceful end to Stroudsburg standoff

STROUDSBGURG – Police have identified the man they now say allegedly kidnapped and raped a young girl before holding them off for 90 minutes with gunfire.

Derek Bengtsson, 27, was talked into surrendering, without incident, about 9:30 this morning, after the standoff at the Budget Host Inn, in downtown Stroudsburg.  That was after a tense hour and a half that began when a 14-year-old girl called police to say she was forced, at gunpoint, from her Middle Smithfield Township home about 1:30 this morning and taken to the motel, where she was assaulted.

The girl was able to get out of the room and contact police, who responded to the hotel about 8:00.   Some shots were fired at police officers, but no one was injured.

A Stroud Area Regional Police SWAT team persuaded Bengtsson to surrender.  He was taken into custody, and likely will face a long list of serious charges, including attempted homicide, kidnapping and sexual assault.
