STROUDSBURG – Derek Bengtsson, of East Stroudsburg, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Bengtsson, 27, was arrested following a situation that began with the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl, and a standoff with police at a Stroudsburg motel.  The incident ended when the suspect surrendered, but not after firing several shots at police who responded.  No one was hurt in the shootout.

Police were called to the scene after the young girl managed to escape.
