National Park Service plans analysis of proposed power line route

BUSHKILL - The National Park Service will take a close look at PPL’s decision to use “Route B” for its planned 500-kilovolt power line, which would cut across the southern portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  PPL’s proposal needs to receive approval from the appropriate regulatory authorities in each state.

The NPS will ensure a thorough environmental review of the potential impacts to the natural and human environments under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The proposed electric transmission corridor not only crosses the national recreation area in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but also crosses the Middle Delaware National Scenic River, the Appalachian Trail (AT), and many private properties, businesses, housing developments, resorts, and townships in the area.

The superintendent will consult with other affected parties along the corridor, as well as with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and the appropriate state and local officials before any further comment is issued.

“The public may rest assured that every effort will be made to protect the natural and cultural resources in this outstanding unit of the National Park System, the National Scenic River , the Appalachian Trail , as well as the unique recreational experiences they all provide for today's visitors and for our children's children”, said Superintendent John J. Donahue.  “At Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the National Park Service always makes every effort to balance legitimate societal needs with the legislated mission of protecting our local and national heritage”.
