Recycling center abuse

Milford Township recycling center, late Thursday afternoon

Milford – One of Pike County's recycling centers was shut down Thursday, after people continued to bring trash, even though the place was overflowing from the holiday weekend.  "Closed" signs were posted at the Milford Township center.

A similar center at the nearby Dingman Township building, which had been emptied, was operating by late Thursday afternoon.  Drop-off stations in other townships reportedly have similar messes.

All centers shut down are expected to reopen when trucks are able to remove the debris.  Currently, the county has only three trucks servicing the nine recycling centers throughout the county.

Pike County Commissioner Harry Forbes wants all citizens who go to the recycling centers in Pike County to be more responsible. “The centers are a mess and I encourage all citizens to be more responsible when recycling”, said Forbes, at Wednesday’s weekly meeting. “When you see the bins full, come back another day to give them time to get the bins empty.”

The problem becomes particularly critical on weekends, and there was an especially large overflow following the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Forbes noted that people had stacked piles of plastic foam right in front of the sign that clearly prohibits disposal of foam.
