Mother guilty of burning infant son

HONESDALE – A jury in Wayne County found Susan Pevec guilty of six of the seven counts alleging she burned her 14-month-old son in a custody dispute.

Pevec, 30, of Browndale, was acquitted of only one charge – tampering with evidence.  The jury convicted her of two felony counts, including endangering the welfare of a child and intercepting a wire.  She was also found guilty of two counts of simple assault and two counts of filing falss reports.

The defense argued, during the week-long trial, that the evidence did not clearly show Pevec committed any of the crimes.  They argued the child’s father, her estranged boyfriend, caused the injuries, noting that several members of the father’s family had contact with the child the day the injury occurred.

Pevec could receive a maximum term of 21 years in prison when sentenced September 21.  She remains free on $75,000 bail.  Custody and visitation rights have been suspended.
