Century-old post office shutting down

STERLING TOWNSHIP – After more than 100 years, the post office in the small Wayne County hamlet of South Sterling will close at the end of business today.  That means for now, a five-mile drive, to Newfoundland, for customers who used the South Sterling PO.

The United States Postal Service says they had no choice but to ‘temporarily suspend’ service because the lease ran out on the building, and the owner of the property decided not to renew.  No decision has been made on whether to try to reopen in the same location, or perhaps find a new home in the area.

Home mail delivery will continue unchanged.  Customers with boxes at South Sterling must now go to Newfoundland.  They will keep the same box numbers.

Sterling Township has a population of about 1,200.
